The Concept of Prestressing Force

1. Prestressing force is the stress applied to the member before loading;

2. Prestressing force makes full use of the compressive strength and tensile strength of the material, and can improve the crack resistance of concrete, but will not improve the load carrying capacity of the member;

4. The inverted arch of the member caused by prestressing can offset the deflection of the constant load, but it has almost no effect on the deformation caused by variable loads;

5. prestressing is an internal force in the member, which does not destabilize the member, but rather improves the stability of the member. For example, prestressing can be applied to precast piles to improve the stability of the piles during transportation and pile driving;

A prestressing system usually consists of several components, including anchor, wedge, strand, and bellows.
